چکیده

The dynamics of dislocation assemblies in deforming crystals indicates the emergence of collective phenomena, intermittent fluctuations and strain avalanches. In polycrystalline materials, the understanding of plastic deformation mechanisms depends on grasping the role of grain boundaries on dislocation motion. Here the interaction of dislocations and elastic, lowangle grain boundaries is studied in the framework of a discrete dislocation representation. We allow grain boundaries to deform under the effect of dislocation stress fields and compare the effect of such a perturbation to the case of rigid grain boundaries. We are able to determine, both analytically and numerically, corrections to dislocation stress fields acting on neighboring grains, as mediated by grain boundary deformation. Finally, we discuss conclusions and consequences for the avalanche statistics, as observed in polycrystalline samples.

Investigation of extended stacking fault emission from grain boundaries using a density functional theory -informed 3D phase field dislocation dynamics model

As characteristic length scales shrink (<100 nm) in fcc metals, alternative deformation mechanisms not seen in bulk and course-grained material counterparts emerge. In particular in grain sizes on the order of 10s of nanometers, plasticity is mediated by the motion and interaction of partial dislocations and extended stacking faults. Typically, partial dislocations nucleate at grain boundary de...

Stress-assisted grain growth in nanocrystalline metals: Grain boundary mediated mechanisms and stabilization through alloying

The mechanisms of stress-assisted grain growth are explored using molecular dynamics simulations of nanoindentation in nanocrystalline Ni and Ni-1 at.% P as a function of grain size and deformation temperature. Grain coalescence is primarily confined to the high stress region beneath the simulated indentation zone in nanocrystalline Ni with a grain size of 3 nm. Grain orientation and atomic dis...

Direct observation of individual dislocation interaction processes with grain boundaries

In deformation processes, the presence of grain boundaries has a crucial influence on dislocation behavior; these boundaries drastically change the mechanical properties of polycrystalline materials. It has been considered that grain boundaries act as effective barriers for dislocation glide, but the origin of this barrier-like behavior has been a matter of conjecture for many years. We directl...

Critical assessment of hydrogen effects on the slip transmission across grain boundaries in α -Fe.

Grain boundaries (GBs) play a fundamental role in the strengthening mechanism of crystalline structures by acting as an impediment to dislocation motion. However, the presence of an aggressive environment such as hydrogen increases the susceptibility to intergranular fracture. Further, there is a lack of systematic investigations exploring the role of hydrogen on the dislocation-grain-boundary ...

Atomistic Simulations of Stress Concentration and Dislocation Nucleation at Grain Boundaries

Dislocation channeling observed in irradiated metals has been thought to be one of the key stress factors in irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking since it is an evidence to suggest that the slip deformation is localized and that the strong misfit are generated at grain boundaries. In the present study, the stress concentration and defect nucleation of polycrystalline copper thin film ...
